Slot car racing history goes way back to 1912 when the Lionel Train Company made the first slot car models as an extra add-on accessory for their model train sets.
Slot car racing was big entertainment in homes from the 1930s all the way into the 1960s.
During the 1970s, it slowed down since more electronic toys were being produced.
Some called the slot car racing industry a fad at the time, but there’s been loyal fans, and newcomers being introduced to the hobby ever since.
A huge variety of automotive styles have been produced over the years, mostly based on the stock car or NASCAR type versions of their real life counterparts, of which, of course, during the 1980s, the Buick Regal was a very popular choice.
There has been many slot car manufacturers since the beginning, including Aurora AFX, Johnny Lightning (xtraction series), tyco slot cars, and AutoWorld being the most popular for Buick Grand National slot car fans.
1:64 scale versions (called “HO scale”) are typically popular, but there’s also other larger sizes produced, like 1:43 and even some 1:24 scale versions.
