The final part we are blacking out in the interior of this 1987 Buick Grand National is the lower dash vent (AKA “ball chiller” to some Turbo Regal owners).
This vent is the one on the drivers side of the car, under the dash, below the steering column.
It simply snaps in and out.
Take a flathead screwdriver and gently pry it out.
(push it back in to replace; angle it in on 1 side, then push the other end in)
The same procedure we used on most of the other painted items applies here as well.
Scuff it up with the red scotchbrite pad (as best you can, getting inside the slots isn’t easy!), then use the self-etching primer, topped off with a few coats of the matte black plasti dip paint.
There’s a foam washer on each end of it, that’s glued in place.
This acts to keep the airflow directed thru the grates (and to sort of make it turn easier, as well as hold it in your desired position).
Since we don’t really ever mess with this vent, we just left the foam in place while we painted this part (but tried to keep the paint away from this area).
Another 20 minute job.
.
Success!
We’ve finished up this series, and blacked out as much as possible in the cabin.
We like the visual difference that all the dechroming makes!
(but of course, different strokes for different folks, and we’re admittedly definitely different! lol)
