Dash Vents: Fix Chrome Trim Outline (Air Duct Vent Edge)

Eventually, the original chrome looking outline on your air duct vents will start to wear out. Kind of to be expected on a 30+ year old OEM part.

It’s little details like this that really bug some people.
We agree, it just looks bad, and not normal, especially if the rest of your dashboard is relatively perfect.

For car show participants, things like this may also take away from judging points.
(although repairing them may take away from the “originality” aspect)

Never fear though, there’s an easy solution.

We saw (years ago) that they sold chrome “decals” to use for this purpose.
This type was acquired, but in our instance, when we stuck them on they didn’t stick very well (since they are only about 1/8″ wide).
So another remedy was needed for this area.

The easy solution, is to acquire a paint pen.
They make them in a silver color and look decent as a fix to this issue.
(you can acquire one for a couple bucks)

On our Buick Grand National, we initially did the silver paint pen.
This lasted a few years, and again wears out due to sun fade, or gets smudges if you touch it to move the direction of the vents frequently.

The second time around, we used a blue paint pen, since it matches the color scheme we have going on with our Turbo Regal.
It’s different looking (comparatively), but fits in nicely with our other blue colored trim parts.

A TIP: while the vents can be popped out, it might be a good idea to just leave them in place, as their age makes some of them brittle, and you don’t want to break them.
Just slide the center part out of the way while you take your time outlining the outer edges.

It took us about 10 minutes to do all 4 of them, so this is a nice simple job you can perform that will make the interior of your Gbody Regal look better.
