Vintage Part: ORT Turbo Saver For Buick Regal Models

A look at a vintage part that was created shortly after the end of the factory Turbo Buick Regal model run.

A company called ORT (Oregon Research Technology Inc), produced the Turbo Saver (not to be confused with the current generation product with the same name that has a different function).

We recently saw for sale (ebay) a complete NOS kit for this item.

The seller said:
The kit comes complete and as shown in all the original packaging and original box with all the original super detailed installation instructions and the kit even comes with the original bill of sale – dated 1989.
This kit was not cheap back in the day and sold for over $240.00 back in 1989!
This kit will fit ALL 1986 to 1989 Buick Turbo Regals including Grand National, GNX, WE4, T Type and Turbo Limited.

Marked as Part #1015 – MK II Vehicle Saver/Turbo Saver kit.

The Turbo Saver is a fully automatic oiling system that supplies 40 to 50 PSI oil pressure directly to the turbocharger and engine during the two most critical periods of operation.

The Turbo Saver is designed to maximize turbocharger operational life by eliminating ‘coking’ and resultant bearing wear associated with an inadequate oil supply.
At engine start up the Turbo Saver provides adequate oil pressure for 15 to 20 seconds to prevent possible cold start damage to the turbo and engine.

At engine shut down, the Turbo Saver lubricates the turbo and engine for 4 to 5 minutes to prevent oil ‘coking’ that usually results from high temperature and low oil supply.

The automatic operation of the Turbo Saver removes the need for Buick Turbo owners to idle their engines to reduce heat transfer.

Sounded like a good idea for a useful product.
We never used one, but remember them being for sale.
Long time Turbo Regal owners may have installed them back in the day, or know about them.

Here’s what the kit looks like.
