Several years back, there use to be a place that sold only the bezel that holds the gauges in place.
They had several patterns available, depending on how many gauges you wanted to have.
The first one shown was the most popular due to gauge location & quantity of gauges supported.

When you bought this type of gauge cluster bezel, it was a flat piece of metal.
Meaning, it didn’t sit down “into” the dash like the factory setup did.
You installed it up against the outside dash cluster bezel, with no plastic cover on top of the gauges (like the stock gauges had) – {see the first pic for visual clarification}.
You could, technically, lay it down into the dash like the original setup was made, but there were no (left & right) sides on it, so there’s an open area left exposed (but you could reuse the clear plastic original piece if you wanted to).
Most people who bought this bezel just installed it flat, as opposed to the sunken in effect of the stock speedo setup.
