SWITCH NAME:

Ignition Switch

PURPOSE OF SWITCH:

When the key is turned, a rod in the steering column is pushed downward (towards the firewall) which makes the connection on the ignition switch to activate the starter (etc).

TURNS ON-OFF / FUNCTIONS / USED WHEN:

when you turn the car key forward (“on”) the ignition switch is engaged

LOCATION IN VEHICLE:

located on top of the steering column (behind dash).

metal base with white or blue body

CONNECTOR PLUG COLOR (SWITCH SIDE):

white or blue

CONNECTOR PLUG COLOR (HARNESS SIDE):

There’s 2 wiring plugs that attach, 1 is light blue (front), 1 is black (rear, nearest the firewall).

COLOR & PURPOSE OF (HARNESS SIDE) WIRES:

purple-white (“start” “S”), goes to starter interrupt relay (“D”) (for theft deterrent system)
or to purple wire to starter without theft deterrent system

pink (“run” “T1”), goes to (junction) starter interrupt relay (“B”) (for theft deterrent system)
[the below connections are all on separate wires coming from the junction]
(junction connects with ecm sol fuse)
(junction connects with ccci fuse)
(junction connects with gages fuse)
(junction connects with cruise fuse)
(junction connects with turn b/u fuse, ecm ign fuse, fp/inj fuse, st blt/acc fuse)
(junction connects with twilight sentinel)
(junction connects with other things)

red (start), goes to (junction) fusible link “A”
(connects with fusible link “B”)
(connects with stop haz fuse)
(junction connects with other things)

another red (accy), goes to (junction) & connects with above red wire items

brown (run “A”), goes to wiper fuse, radio fuse

orange (run “T3”), goes to c/h fuse – a/c fuse – wdo circuit breaker

dark green “G1”, goes to (junction) to water temp indicator bulb (on dash) “4”
(connects with coolant temp switch “B”)
[coolant temp switch closed above 250 degrees]

tan-white “G2” (bulb test, start), goes to (junction) to instrument cluster brake indicator light
(connects with brake pressure switch, park brake switch, ignition switch, PM brake accumulator pressure switch “”B)

[mechanical block in steering column allows starting in “N” or “P” only]

To remove plugs: the rear connector (black) must come out first.
There is a latch lever on both plugs that need to be lifted up to remove.
The blue plug lever is on the front. The black plug lever is on the rear (nearest the firewall).
Reinstall them in the opposite order.
